"A Perfected Storm" - How can you make aero wheels even faster?

DT Swiss asked themselves this question in collaboration with Swiss Side and Continental, gained remarkable insights and even surpassed the aerodynamics of a WTS system.

Hypothesis: "A system consisting of a wheel and a tire can improve the performance of the overall system."

The aerodynamic performance of DT wheels is now undisputed, as the aero rims, spokes and hubs have been developed and coordinated down to the smallest detail. In order to optimize the entire wheel-tire system (WTS), it was a logical consequence to include an aerodynamic tire in further development steps. However, since no tire could be found that met the requirements in terms of low air resistance while still offering controllable riding characteristics, DT Swiss decided to develop their own tire from scratch.

The long and successful collaboration between Swiss Side and DT Swiss made the search for the most recognized expert in aerodynamics in the bicycle industry very easy. While the form and function were already determined at an early stage, the project required more support from an expert in tire material and composition. It turned out that Continental was the best partner who could not only understand the WTS concept, but also implement the patented tire concept in a new, modern bicycle tire. With the AERO 111 front tire, they developed the most modern, aerodynamic wheel/tire system (WTS). The aerodynamic superiority of the WTS means that the two components can hardly be considered separately in future.

Vortex producer

48 small chambers are evenly distributed over the entire surface. DT Swiss refers to these elements as vortex generators, as it is precisely these features that influence and control the turbulence of the airflow on the tire surface of the front wheel. The special tread design reduces drag by increasing wind suction and improving steering torque. The tire offers low rolling resistance, good puncture protection and exceptional grip (wet and dry).

BlackChili Compound

Continetal has revolutionized the cycling scene with its unique tread compound, which is only produced in Germany. The legendary Black Chili Compound has provided a lasting answer to the eternal question of grip versus rolling resistance. The latest polymers as well as specially developed carbon black particles and fillers guarantee unique performance - whether on road bikes, gravel or mountain bikes, for time trials or downhill.

Vectran Breaker

Vectran is spun from the liquid crystal polymer Vectra. This produces a thermoplastic, multi-fiber yarn. By comparison, this semi-crystalline fabric is more cut-resistant than aramid and has five times the tensile strength of steel. A Vectran breaker is lighter, more flexible and provides more effective protection against cuts than comparable nylon breakers. Rolling resistance is not negatively affected.

Tire widths of the WTS

• AERO wheels are supplied with 26mm front | 28mm rear and
• ENDURANCE wheels are supplied with 29mm front | 30mm rear.

All aluminum wheels are supplied with butyl tubes, while all carbon wheels are supplied with TPU tubes.
